Throughout the week of March 14th, the 25 year old star quarterback, Deshaun Watson, has received 14 alleged cases of sexual assault and misconduct from people throughout his training staff and the Houston Texans organization. Watson, an up and coming star in the league, is trying to claim his innocence on twitter by posting a tweet on March 16th saying, “As a result of a social media post by a publicity-seeking plaintiff's lawyer. I recently became aware of this lawsuit that has apparently been filed against me. I have not yet seen the complaint, but I know this; I have never treated any women with anything other than the utmost respect.” At the end of the tweet Watson states that he is “looking forward to clearing his name.” Since the first allegation came out, many other trainers and people in contact with Deshaun and the Houston Texans
organization have recently come out and told their own stories. Whether these allegations are true or not is still up in the air as an investigation has yet to be launched by the Houston Police Dept. This current situation has been brought up amidst the United Kingdom article, in which 97% of women interviewed were sexually harassed, sparking an uproar on twitter and beginning a movement. The young Quarterback has had a lot of controversy around him for reasons other than this in the past few weeks. The 4-12 Texans, recently hired a new general manager, and Deshaun was not happy that the face of their franchise, himself, was not allowed to help make the decision. He has been trying to make his way out of Houston for a long time now, and many believe that this stunt is a sick and twisted way that is trying to ruin and tarnish his name, so much that he is forced out of Houston and will finally be able to move on. Deshaun isn’t the first professional athlete to be in this situation. For example, veteran quarterback Ben Rothlisberger of the Pittsburgh Steelers, was accused of sexual assault back in 2009 on hotel employee, Andrea McNulty. Many fans and people around the globe are calling for change. People believe as if this happens way too much and they think that since they’re professional athletes, they have the fame and money to get out of the situation. However, there are many people who are on the other side of the fence saying that he is innocent until proven guilty, and the people making these accusations are just trying to get free money and fame. In 2018, the BBC did a story on “The Truth About False Assault Allegations'' in which they found out that only 8% of the accusations made are false.
With this being said, things are not looking good for future star Quarterback Deshaun Watson and his career. Of course you are innocent until proven guilty however in this case, it sure seems as Deshaun is going to have a long road ahead of him.
