The Great Mask Debate: Wearing a Mask vs Anti-Mask

Due to the coronavirus masks are required in order to shop inside stores and eat in restaurants. Do you think that's a little obsessive or not enough? Should we be required to wear masks? As of right now South Dakota is the only state that has no mask requirements at all. States like Florida, Oklahoma, and Wyoming have some state requirements, meaning it's not against the law if you don't wear one. But other states like Colorado, Texas, and Arkansas have mask requirements statewide. In California, it's a $100 fine if you get caught not wearing one.

At the start of the pandemic the CDC recommended everyone wear masks and gloves to help protect themselves from COVID-19. This caused a panic leading everyone to buy masks and gloves, leaving hospitals in short supply. The New York Times stated on April 3rd, 2020, “Some are reusing masks and gloves. Others have taken to social media with public pleas for help using the hashtag #GetMePPE, (an acronym for personal protective Disposable Masks typically

workers and employers across the country continue to

face shortages and the dangers of contracting the virus

are higher without the proper protection.

Per the New York Times, “With medical masks in short supply, many have turned to making or buying homemade ones. Depending on the fabric and how it’s made, a homemade mask can sometimes protect the way a simple medical version does. And any face covering is better than nothing.” Online websites like Etsy and other similar businesses offer different types of masks to consumers. People can also learn how to make their own masks from Pinterest or DIY websites.

Since the strict rules for mask wearing some people say it goes against their first amendment rights. According to OPB’s article, Sharif Robert Snaza of Washington’s Lewis County Sheriff's Office speaks by calling the Governor an “idiot'' and that “ He's overstepping his bounds, violating people's constitutional rights.” Snaza continues to state “don't be

sheep”, meaning don't be a follower. There is no specific law about the material the mask has to be made out of, so anti-

Public Radio Masker on July 6th.

CDC Director Robert R. Redfield, MD said, “CDC officials say the latest science shows that face masks are a key tool in the battle against COVID-19 that could help reduce the spread of the disease, We are not defenseless against COVID-19, cloth face coverings are one of the most powerful weapons we have to slow and stop the spread of the virus.” Masks are definitely annoying but it has been proven by multiple Doctors that wearing a mask is a key part of beating the virus.
