The highly anticipated and somewhat controversial Oprah interview of Meghan Markle and Prince Harry released in the United States on March 7th. The interview broadcasted new information on the reasoning for the couples decision to renounce their titles and the talks surrounding the birth of their first child, Archie. The topic was trending on social media and news networks for weeks, creating some controversy around the topic.
The majority of people seemed to support the couple and their decision, and sympathized for Meghan’s mental health struggles and the racism directed at her and Archie from the establishment. Some others, like Piers Morgan, had other views. He said on Good Morning Britain while discussing the interview and Meghan’s own experiences, “I don’t believe almost anything that comes out of her mouth and I think the damage she’s done to the British Monarchy…. frankly contemptible.” (BBC News). He later resigned after his co hosts and viewers displayed anger towards him. Members of Twitter seemed to wildly disagree and once again outpoured support for the two.
In the interview, Meghan was interviewed first then was later joined by her husband, Prince Harry. Meghan discussed her mental health, saying “I didn’t want to be alive anymore. And it was a very clear and real and frightening, constant thought.” (The Guardian). She also talked about her decision to ask the institution for help, saying in the interview, “I went to the institution and I said that I needed to go somewhere to get help… and I was told that I couldn’t, that it wouldn’t be good for the institution.” (The Guardian). Viewers who also struggled with mental health issues took to social media to voice their sympathy towards Meghan. One of the more prominent portions of the interview was the discussion about the son of the couple, Archie. “In those months when I was pregnant… and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born.” Oprah’s reaction was identical to many others after hearing that statement; shock and anger. Both Harry and Meghan refused to comment on who started that conversation, Meghan only saying that it was a senior member.
Harry’s portion of the interview was just as shocking, bringing up his mother and his relationship with his father. Prince Charles and Prince Harry have never seemed to be very close, and Harry’s statements further proved that. “... and two conversations with my father before he stopped taking my calls. And then he said ‘Can you put this all in writing?’” (The Guardian). One can infer that Charles disapproved of his son’s choice to leave for the sake of his wife and son, but one can not be sure. He also responded to a question about what his late mother, Princess Diana, would think about everything saying, “I think she would feel very angry about how this has panned out, and very sad.” (Sky News). People quickly noticed the similarities between this interview, and the one Diana did in 1995.
Overall, this interview was a shock to some and not a surprise to others, but left people wondering what happens behind closed doors.
